MyABCD

This is a CD-rom, which runs from the disc for use on the computer, the disc consists of

  • the alphabet (it loads each letter in turn names them, say the sound and puts the word in context with an animated picture),
  • numbers (it flashes up a number and the corresponding number of objects and encourages counting by rote.
  • music (several different instruments which play when you move the mouse over them)
  • Games (mazes, puzzles and other simple games),
My first impression (without children present) was how basic, and how repetitive some of the images were, how simple it was to do things, but then I handed the computer over to the children (age 5, 3 and 18 months).

The 5 year old quickly learnt his way round, discovered what the programme could do, realised he could exit without the keyboard (the programme only needs the mouse to work) and discovered the delights of playing tunes on the guitar and drum kit. The 18 month old watched fascinated and briefly moved the mouse from side to side, making noises on the instruments.

The 3 year olds enjoyed counting along with the programme (the voice is Australian - but bearable) which led them through counting by rote from 1 - 20, and they they listened to the letters in the alphabet naming the sounds they knew.

The programme offers a great start if you need a programme which will enable the children to use the computer - (the children can not access other areas of the computer), they can work alone from quite a young age which builds confidence and it focuses on important foundation areas and therefore can be used in your planning for specific Foundation Stage goals.
