| There is a big picture of
the caterpillar when he has eaten a lot of food. This is followed by a
picture of the cocoon, and finally the butterfly. The language is simple
and clear and children are soon able to recall the sequence of events and
learn new vocabulary (Communication, Language and Literacy).
Children love the section
of the book which shows the types of fruit eaten by the caterpillar on
each day of the week; there are holes through each piece of fruit. It is,
therefore, an excellent resource for learning days of the week, and colours,
as well as types of fruit. The story also helps children develop counting
skills as the caterpillar eats an increasing number of fruit each day (Mathematical
Development). On Saturday the caterpillar eats 10 different types of food
- this section can be used to aid discussion on healthy food and food which
is not so good for us (Physical Development).
This book is a classic and
fun to read.
