under5s - autumn
Now the nights are drawing in, the leaves are falling from the trees, and summer is just a distant memory, our thoughts can turn to autumn. In the UK the first day of autumn falls in September and runs through to December.
This is a particularly colourful time of year, as the leaves turn from green to yellow and red, and then to brown. It is also a good time for collecting some free natural resources for the nature table - different types of leaves, big ones, small ones - yellow, brown and green. Conkers and conker shells (Horse Chestnuts). Fir cones (these also make great christmas decorations when you have finished with them), and bits of twig. Gather some evergreen leaves to contrast with those which have been shed and explain why these stay green and why some trees don't shed their leaves at all.
Why not take the children on a nature walk to experience autumn for themselves. They can help collect the leaves and cones. There is nothing quite like kicking your way through a pile of fallen leaves.

Here are some leaf pictures for you to print off. If you laminate the prints and then cut around the leaves you will have some leaf templates which you can use again and again. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to access these files.

Use real leaves from the garden, and wooden numerals, to play matching games and grouping and counting games, or use the worksheets below.
Or why not print off our autumn colouring in page of children playing in the falling leaves. This loads straight into your browser window.

Falling Leaves

We have also created a series of pictures depicting the sequence of autumn. The leaves on the trees turning from green to yellow, and falling to the ground until they have all been shed. These pictures with captions are available only as a PDF file, so you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to access it. The 3 pictures are saved as one file, this means it is quite large at 130k and will therefore take a minute or so to download. To save time right click on the link and save the file to your hard drive, and then open it off-line.
