Young children learn by exploration and investigation. They need to learn how to use equipment correctly and safely. With regular access to equipment young children will soon become confident and competent in this area.
Practitioners should plan activities using the following types of
equipment :
  • remote control vehicles (suitable for this age group e.g. Fisher-Price)
  • computers (these do not need to be expensive state of the art PCs, we used an old Amiga 500 which was perfectly suitable for 3-5 year olds)
  • basic cassette recorders (with headphone sets)

Of course learning through play is one of the best ways of learning. Role play areas should, therefore, include the use of ICT e.g. telephones, calculators, tills, TVs, and kitchen equipment etc.

An excellent, and free, information leaflet, suitable for both practitioners and parents, is available in pdf format from the BECTA website, (you will need Adobe Acrobat to read this)
