Mothering Sunday or Mother's Day
Mothering Sunday/Mother's Day
It is Mothering Sunday on Sunday 11th March 2018 in the UK and on Sunday 13th May 2018 in the USA. It is the day when traditionally people honour the mother figure in their life. This might be an actual mother, step-mother, grandmother or principal carer. In the past Mothering Sunday was linked with people returning to their 'mother church', for example where they were baptised on the fourth Sunday of Lent which falls three weeks before Easter Sunday. |
In America Mothering Sunday is always on the second Sunday in May. The then American President Woodrow Wilson declared this in 1914 following a campaign by Anna Jarvis to reinstate Mothering Sunday after her own mother died on the 9th May 1907. Woodrow Wilson described his proclaimation "as a public expression of love and reverence for the mothers of our country." See Woodrow Wilson's proclaimation here https://www.archives.gov/historical-docs/todays-doc/?dod-date=509
In Britain the tradition was revived by Constance Smith who had read about Anna Jarvis's campaign in 1913.
Today cards, flowers, and gifts are given on Mothering Sunday. Even better are the cards and gifts children make themselves, here are a few ideas and suggestions.

Card ideas
Put a vase of flowers on a table or a picture of flowers on a wall and ask the children to draw the flowers on a piece of paper or thin cardboard. Daffodils are a good choice at this time of year.
Attach the paper to some thin card or just use the cardboard and ask the children to fold it in half to make a Mother's Day card. Suitable for age 3 and above.
Ask the children to draw a picture of their mother or carer, on paper or thin cardboard to make a Mother's Day card. The results may be quite amusing.
